Profit calculator
See the trade before you place it. Enter the entry, take profit, stop loss and lot size; the calculator shows the profit, the loss, the pips and the reward-to-risk, with commission taken out.
Fill in the form to see the result.
Educational arithmetic on the figures you enter. Example prices are placeholders, not live quotes; contract sizes and pip definitions vary by broker. Not financial advice.
How it works
Profit is the distance the price travels in your favour, times the units you hold, minus what the broker charges:
The reward-to-risk ratio is the profit at the target divided by the loss at the stop. The table under the result shows the outcome at exits between the stop and beyond the target, useful for partial-close plans.
Zone + layers
With Zone + layers the trade is read the way the journal records it: up to ten equal layers from the zone start to the zone end, the stop a set number of pips beyond the zone end, the target measured from the last filled layer. Profit and loss are summed layer by layer at each layer's own entry, and the table shows every layer's contribution, so a partly filled zone comes out right.
Spread and swap
Enter the price you were (or will be) filled at; the spread is already inside that. Overnight swap is not included because it depends on how long the trade runs and on your broker's rate; for a multi-day gold trade check the swap in the symbol specification and subtract it.
Worked example: gold
Buy 0.10 lots gold at 4,500.00, take profit 4,520.00, stop loss 4,490.00, no commission:
On a $5,000 balance that is +4% at the target and −2% at the stop. With a $7 per lot round-turn commission the 0.10-lot trade costs $0.70 each way, which moves the break-even price to 4,500.07 and trims the profit to $199.30.
FAQ
Questions traders ask
How is profit calculated on a gold trade?
Gold moves in dollars per ounce and a standard lot is 100 ounces, so every $1.00 move is worth $100 per lot: a buy from 4,500 to 4,520 on 0.10 lots earns 20 × 100 × 0.10 = $200 before costs. Measured in pips at size 0.10 that is 200 pips at $1 per pip. Sells work the same way in reverse: the price has to fall for the trade to gain.
Does the calculator include the spread?
The spread is paid when you enter: your buy fills at the ask and your stop or target is measured from there. Enter the actual fill price and the spread is already accounted for. If you are planning a trade from a chart, add the spread to the stop distance to be safe, because the stop on a buy is triggered by the bid.
What does commission per lot round turn mean?
Some accounts charge a fixed fee per standard lot to open and close (a round turn), for example $6 or $7 per lot, instead of a wider spread. Enter that figure and the calculator multiplies it by your lot size and subtracts it from the profit, adds it to the loss and moves the break-even price accordingly.
Why is the loss different from the profit when the stop and target are the same distance?
With equal distances and no commission they are equal. Commission makes the loss slightly larger and the profit slightly smaller. Different distances change the reward-to-risk ratio: 200 pips to the target and 100 to the stop is 1:2, which the risk/reward calculator turns into the win rate you need to break even.
How is profit calculated for a zone entry with layers?
Each layer is a separate entry at its own price with the same lot. The take profit is one price for the whole position, measured from the last layer that filled, and the stop is one price beyond the zone end. Profit at the target is the sum of every filled layer's pips to that price times the pip value times the lot; the loss at the stop is the same sum towards the stop. Layers that did not fill add nothing, which is why the calculator asks how many filled.
Can I use this for indices, oil and crypto?
Yes, with the contract size caveat: indices are usually $1 per point per lot, oil is often 100 barrels per lot and crypto CFDs vary between brokers. The instrument list carries typical values; use Custom instrument with your broker's specification if they differ.
