How it works

A pivot point is the average of the previous period's prices; the support and resistance levels are spread above and below it by the previous range. The four methods differ in how they spread them:

Classic P = (H + L + C) ÷ 3 R1 = 2P − L S1 = 2P − H R2 = P + (H − L) R3 = H + 2(P − L) Fibonacci R1/R2/R3 = P + 0.382 / 0.618 / 1.000 × (H − L) Woodie P = (H + L + 2C) ÷ 4 (the close counts double) Camarilla R1–R4 = C + (H − L) × 1.1 ÷ 12 / 6 / 4 / 2

Fibonacci retracement levels divide a swing into the ratios 23.6, 38.2, 50, 61.8 and 78.6 percent: after an up-move, level = high − range × ratio. Extensions at 127.2, 161.8, 200 and 261.8 percent project beyond the swing end. The table gives each level's price and its distance in pips from the swing end.

These are reference prices where traders watch for a reaction. None of them is a signal on its own.

Worked example: gold

Gold's previous session: high 4,530.00, low 4,470.00, close 4,510.00 (a 600-pip range at 0.10):

Classic P 4,503.33 R1 4,536.67 R2 4,563.33 R3 4,596.67 S1 4,476.67 S2 4,443.33 S3 4,416.67 Camarilla R1 4,515.50 R2 4,521.00 R3 4,526.50 R4 4,543.00

Classic R1 sits 266.7 pips above the close. Camarilla packs its levels around the close, so its R3 and S3 are only 165 pips away: the two methods answer different questions.

Now take the same range as an up-move from 4,470 to 4,530. The Fibonacci retracements fall at 4,507.08 (38.2%), 4,500.00 (50%) and 4,492.92 (61.8%); a continuation past the high has its 161.8% extension at 4,567.08.

FAQ

Questions traders ask

What is a pivot point?

A reference price calculated from the previous period's high, low and close, usually the previous day. Traders read price above the pivot as stronger and below it as weaker, and watch the support and resistance levels above and below it for reactions.

What is the difference between classic, Fibonacci, Woodie and Camarilla pivots?

All four start from the previous high, low and close. Classic spreads the levels by the full range, Fibonacci by 38.2, 61.8 and 100 percent of it, Woodie counts the close twice in the pivot, and Camarilla places four tight levels around the close. Use the one your platform or your own plan uses; the table shows all four side by side.

Which high, low and close should I enter?

For daily pivots, the previous trading day's; for weekly pivots, last week's; for monthly, last month's. Brokers close the daily candle at different hours (often 17:00 New York or midnight server time), so read the values off your own platform's chart to match the levels you see there.

How do I use Fibonacci retracement levels?

Pick a clear swing, enter its high and low and the direction of the move. The 38.2, 50 and 61.8 percent levels mark where price commonly pauses on its way back; the extensions mark possible targets beyond the swing. Traders combine them with structure and other levels, because no ratio works on its own.

Does it work for gold?

Yes. Gold (XAUUSD) is the default, and the distances are shown in pips at your chosen pip size (0.10 for gold on the journal's count). Switch the instrument for silver, forex pairs, indices, oil or crypto; the decimals follow the instrument.

Are these levels trade signals?

No. They are arithmetic on the prices you enter. Whether a level holds or breaks depends on the market at that moment. Nothing here is financial advice.
